Capturing Sound Series Course 5: Problem solving: live and in the studio
Course goals: This six-hour course will show participants some effective ways to solve typical problems and target specific problems participants are having in their own systems.
Some of the topics covered, include:
– Initial set up in the room: The best way to solve common problems.
– How to properly ‘ring out’ a PA and the monitors before the gig
– How to stop and avoid feedback
– Buzzes and grounding
– Defective gear/instruments
– The limitations of sub-par gear
– The effects of bodies in the room: temperature change and the sound of the PA
– Bass frequency rumble in the house: What to do?
– Solutions to drums and guitars that are too loud
– Microphone leakage: stop it or embrace it?
– The bar says that it’s too loud: What do I do?
– Talking to the band to solve problems: What to ask for and what not to ask for
Prerequisites: A basic understanding of PA systems
Who should take this course:
– All musicians
– Everyone interested in getting involved in live sound at festivals and local shows
– Anyone interested in recording music
– Those interested in stage management
– All musicians
These courses will be held at Green Needle Records recording studio located 20 minutes outside of Whitehorse and will run from 10 am to 4 pm.
Dates to be announced based on minimum of 10 participants per session.
Each participant will receive a handout of reference material.
It is recommended to bring a pen and notebook.
Participants should bring a lunch and indoor shoes.
There will a half hour lunch break at 1 pm. A full kitchen, including fridge/stove and toaster oven, is available.
Each course costs $99 plus GST, paid in advance.
Courses cannot be recorded or filmed.
